Colloquium Schedule:

The ERIE colloquium is a weekly event where trainees gather to learn about and discuss ecological restoration topics with experts in these fields. If you would like to recommend a speaker for the colloquium series, please contact David Blersch at dblersch@buffalo.edu.

Unless noted all ERIE Colloquiums are at 1:45 pm to 3:00 pm in 223 Jarvis Hall. For past colloquium schedules, click here.

2009-2010:

September 4th: ERIE faculty Dr. Ken Shockley, a professor in the UB philosophy department, will present "Human values and institutional approaches to adaptive management".

September 11th: John R. Whitney, District Conservationist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service will present on the "History and land use surrounding the West Seneca Oxbow and nearby Buffalo Creek".

September 18th: Mike Meyers of the NYS DEC will present on "Restoration efforts in the Lafarge property on Elton Creek, Cattaraugus County, New York".

September 25th: Dr. Alexander Y. Karatayev (Great Lakes Center,  Buffalo State College),
Dr. Christopher Pennuto (Great Lakes Center,  Buffalo State College) and Dr. Charles O’Neill (New York Sea Grant) will combine forces in Aquatic Invasive Species in New York State: An Environmental Forum. This event is co-scheduled by UB's Evolution. Ecology and Behavior colloquium. It will be held from 1:30 to 4:40pm in the Screening Room of UB's Center for the Arts.

October 2nd: ERIE faculty Dr. Chris Larsen, professor in the UB geography department, will present "The use of historical ecology to provide reference conditions for restoration".

October 30th: Dr. Scott Tiegs, an Assistant Professor from the Department of Biological Sciences at Oakland University, will be presenting his talk "Pacific Salmon and their Diverse Ecological Influences on Alaskan Streams and Rivers". An abstract of his presentation is available online. This will be a joint colloquium with the GIScience IGERT. The colloquium will be held in 170 Filmore (Ellicott complex), time to be announced.

November 6th: Canceled

November 13th: ERIE trainee Shannon Seneca will be presenting material from her recent talk at the 2009 American Indian Science and Engineering Society(AISES) National Conference titled "Native Americans, Ecosystem Restoration, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge."

November 20th:Dr. Charlotte Roehm, Assistant Professor of Geography and Planning at Buffalo State University, will be presenting on a topic entitled "When to Where: Coastal Wetlands of the Great Lakes". The colloquium will be held from 1:45 to 3:00 in Room 140 Ketter (please note the different location).

November 27th: No colloquium - Fall Recess

December 4th: Dr. Joseph Makarewicz of the Dept. of Environmental Science and Biology in SUNY Brockport will be presenting “Lake and Watershed Interactions: Responses of Aquatic Plants, Algae, and Bacteria to Changes in Nutrient Inputs from Agricultural Watersheds.” Colloquium will be held in 140 Ketter.
