The University at Buffalo Great Lakes Program offers a series of summer workshops in ecosystem restoration, available for graduate or continuing education credit. All IGERT trainees are required to complete the workshops, typically during the summer following the first year of coursework.

The summer workshops are taught be experts from UB, Buffalo State College, Ecology and Environment, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and USDA ARS National Sedimentation Laboratory. Past offerings have included week-long sessions in:

  • Integrated watershed approach to stream management and design
  • Riverine ecosystem restoration: channel processes and fluvial geomorphology
  • Innovative bioengineering and planting techniques to enhance function of streams and riparian areas
  • Restoration of riparian zones for water quality and ecological function

Planning is ongoing for the summer 2008 short courses, which will be held during the month of June (concurrent with the Buffalo-Niagara Guitar Festival!). Please visit http://www.eng.buffalo.edu/glp/events/summer2008.htm for details on the 2008 workshops.
